The K-2 Southee Family Races drew a large crowd of parents and friends to the 'school racecourse'. Children, parents and staff decked themselves out in the hats, silks and a selection of horses created a colourful atmosphere for the wonderful afternon of racing.

Southee students had the privilege of working with famous children's author, Nette Hilton (web link) as a part of our visiting author program. Nette led workshop activities for K-6 class groups on one day and 'Inspiring young writers in narrative text types' inservice for the staff on the other.

A large number of primary students enjoyed an interschool Cricket Gala Day, hosted by the Cootamundra Junior Cricket Association.

Yr 12J entertained and educated a large audience of parents and students about the life and works of artist, 'Vincent Van Gogh.'

What a fantastic Southee Fete 2009 evening it was! Lots of great activities, stalls, food, face painting, sponge throwing, greasy pole pillow fight, jumping castle and a talent quest to finish off the evening. Thank you for your wonderful community support in making the evening such a success.

Southee students attended two
Year 6 Interschool LIMS Activity Days with other Year 6 students from Cootamundra Public and Stockinbingal Public School. These days were held at Southee and Cootamundra Public. The days provided an opportunity for them to interact with their peers while participating in music, science, movie animation, debating, drama, woodwork, art and craft activities. Several students and staff from Cootamundra High joined the Primary staff to host the days that are aimed at making the transition to High School much easier. In Term 4 the Yr 6 students will attend further workshops and a Parents-Students-Staff BBQ to further the smooth transition.

Members of the NSW Fire Brigade demonstrated some of the dangers of fire in the kitchen and home generally while they were in town for an inter brigade championship at Jubilee Park. Children were also shown several safety procedures that families could use to prevent fires or help saves lives.

Author, Robert Trickey shared some of his works with the students and had the primary children busy developing their poetry writing skills in the library.

Soroptimist, Helen Hamilton delighted a large number of students with major awards for their art work which was exhibited at the Wattle Time Art Show.

Jump Rope for Heart was again an outstanding success in the level of participation by the students and funds raised for the worthy cause. Finalists from each class competed in the speed skipping, endurance, 'dopes for ropes' tying and several new records were set for a variety of skipping styles.

What a celebration, what colour and imagination by the children and parents to celebrate the 2009 Book Week theme 'Safari'. Many families took advantage of the wonderful weather to watch the parade down Parker St and then enjoy a picnic lunch in Jubilee Park.

Congratulations to our major certificate winners in the Australasian Primary Research Program this year.

Yr 6D had a large school assembly audience of students, parents and friends laughing and tapping their feet in the comical production, Elvis, Snow Bright and the 7 Dinky Di's. With the Fairy waving up Prince Charm Pits, Snow Bright was rescued from her Stepmudder's devilish plan to ride into the sunset. Elvis did go on to bigger things.

The SRC co-ordinated a very successful 'Jeans for Genes' Day with the gold coin donation going to the Children's Medical Research Institute. Scientists there are trying to prevent illnesses such as leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, genetic defects and other disorders before they occur in children and to develop better treatments.

Yr 3W students visited the Riverina Environmental Education Centre and enjoyed hunting for 'ghosts' of animals that are either now extinct from our region or are threatened with extinction due to the effects of man on their environment. This included the threat that introduced animals (cats, dogs and foxes) pose. Microscope work included the viewing of plants and animals close up.

Education Week '09 activities featured the Apex Public Speaking, a picnic lunch, open classroom and our dance team performing with other schools at the Cootamundra Post Office plaza.

Our X-Country team came home with four medals and twelve 'top 10' places from the Cootamundra & District PSSA Cross Country Championships in Murrumburrah. Several members made the District team to compete at the Riverina Championships in Griffith.

Students ran over 2000m (8/9 & 10yrs) and 3000m (11 & 12 yrs) in our Cross Country Championship held on the adjoining golf course and finishing up in the school ground. A large number of parents and grandparents were on hand to cheer the children on.

Staff and students held a very successful K-6 'Super Recess' in aid of Stewart House. Students prepared a variety of scrumptious snacks from ingredients donated by staff in aid of the charitable and worthwhile organisation.

Year 6 visitied the Riverina Environmental Education Centre just outside Wagga as a part of their Science & Technology studies.They discovered many interesting facts about the energy from the sun, CO2 and global warming, machines and energy, controlling the sun's rays, electric circuits and how carbon is trapped in plants.

Southee was well represented at the ANZAC Day march and ceremony at Albert Park. Student leaders participated in the official readings and wreath laying while others joined a large number of supportive community members in attendance.

Our Southee dancers were invited to perform at the Riverina Dance Festival in Albury after auditioning earlier this year.

A large crowd of parents, grandparents and friends enjoyed the colour and creativeness at the Easter Bonnet Parade in our COLA sheltered area. In the leadup days to Easter the SRC ran a variety of popular activities that culimated with the traditional Easter Egg Hunt for all students from Kinder to Year 6.

Our Clean-up Australia Day was a great success with the whole K-6 participating. The Infants did a wonderful job around the school, while the Primary cleaned up the Muttama Creek surrounds between Clarke Oval, the Skate Park and the Cootamundra Olympic Pool. After the clean up, a large number of parents joined the children for a well deserved picnic lunch at the pool.

Our SRC and Year 6 co-ordinated cake stall and mini-fete in support of the Victorian Bushfire Appeal was an outstanding success with $1036 raised. The well run activities (morning tea, goal shooting, tug-a-war, coin drop, cake stall, sponge throwing, sack races, p[llow fights and footy kicking) were all well supported by all K-6 students. Thank you to all the sudents, parents and staff who supported this worthy cause.

Our new water tank was erected by Blue Scope Steel. It will capture precious water from classroom roof tops for use in gardens. It is a great example to the students and to the community of how we are harvesting water. Our students currently benefit from the recycled water, supplied by the Cootamundra Shire Council to our playing grounds at night. The previously dry fields during the hot summer weather are now green and soft to play on.

Cootamundra High School student and Cootamundra Sportsman of the Year 2009, Dylan Berkrey was our popular guest speaker at the 2009 Sports Leadership Assembly. Dylan talked about his recent tour of Singapore with the NSW U16 Football (soccer) team and wished all sporting captains success in their leadership roles. Our school captains introduced this years sporting leaders to the large assembly crowd to receive their badges.

As a part of a NRL promotional visit to the region, three players Scott Logan (Canberra Raiders), Josh Cordoba (Parramatta Eels) and Rick Thorby (St George-Illawarra Dragons), accompanied by Adam Perry (Junee Diesel’s 1st Grade Coach). All were chaperoned by Damian from the NSW Country Rugby League Development Squad. They brought the message of “Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well” which is designed to encourage students towards a healthy and active lifestyle.
